Friday Photo Blogging: Berlin Hauptbahnhof

By the time this post goes live, I’ll (universe willing) be about an hour away from pulling into this:

Hauptbahnhof railway terminal, Berlin

That is the fairly new Hauptbahnhof railway station in central Berlin… and as I’m not there yet, this obviously isn’t my photo, so I shall credit Flickr user SkypeNomad for it, as is proper.

I may have been off from the day job this week, but clearing the decks for the following seven days has been a mammoth task, and I’ve literally just finished at 9pm Thursday – all that is left is this here post, and so it’s going to be very minimal indeed, because I have to get up at 3:30am tomorrow morning to catch my train to London and I need to get some shut-eye in the interim.

Suffice to say that, by weight, my luggage contains far more books and electronics than clothes, and I’m really looking forward to a week away from the usual hurly-burly. I’ll still be checking in on the ol’ intertubes (because an addiction is an addiction, after all), but it’ll be pretty minimal compared to my usual routine. You can expect some posts here about things I get up to, though… as anyone who was on my email list when I travelled in Mexico will tell you, the urge to chunter on about my mundane doings only increases when I’m somewhere new and exciting. If only I’d had a blog back then, eh? 😉

People have been asking me about my itinerary, to which I have answered truthfully that there are lots of things I’d like to see and do, but very little that I’m going to get frustrated by missing. That’s not to say I don’t plan to take advantage of what is, by all reports, a vibrant and fascinating city; what it means is that I’m not going to flog myself around the must-see tourist stops just for the sake of it. Basically, if I find myself just wanting to sit in a park and read a book with a beer or two, I’m going to do exactly that – because I’ve not done it in far too long.

But I can see I’m already shifting into my instinctive ramble, so I’m going to shut off here and have a bath before bed. I’m all packed and ready to roll, and I’m going to have a fun week – I hope you all do too. Auf wiedersehen!

No, the *other* sort of solicitation

Wise words (as ever) from straight-talkin’ Nick Mamatas, this time on the subject of freelancing:

… at the point we are discussing, someone will ask you first. You’ll be solicited to perform some service or produce some product. This is the correct way to respond to a solicitation, if you are at the point of your first (or first dozen or so) solicitations.

  • Step one: Say yes.
  • Step two: Ask how much the pay is.
  • Step three: Ask for specific details on the project.

Simple, sure; but surprisingly daunting to a person with my particular mindset. Which is why this post on squelching modesty in the name of your career is serendipitous, also.
