Hands-free computing

Another bit of science fiction steps closer to becoming a reality. The CeBit technology trade fair saw a demonstration of a ‘mental typewriter’ – a device enabling a human user to control a cursor with their thoughts alone. The project was developed with medical applications in mind (eg, disabled persons being able to use computer devices or control cybernetic prosthestics), but the games industry and the military establishments of the world will no doubt be wetting themselves at the prospects of this technology becoming cost-effective enough to roll out at a commercial level. I’d be happy with the current typing-control interface…it’d save no amount of discomfort in my arms from all these hours at the keyboard. It sure as hell couldn’t make me type any slower!
