2 – Traffic jam mystery solved by mathematicians
“Mathematicians from the University of Exeter have solved the mystery of traffic jams by developing a model to show how major delays occur on our roads, with no apparent cause.” OK, now prevent it from happening.

As mentioned in several of the comments this traffic congestion explanation has been about for a few years, and does seem to come down to people driving too close to the car in front. I do try to keep my distance when on motorways but it’s not always possible; most other drivers don’t so my efforts amount to nothing and I get stuck in the jams anyway. Then I have to stick clsoe to the car in front otherwise everybody else would just jump into the big space I’ve left.
