Of course what you really need is a Mac ;-)

Weirdly enough, during years of completely trying to knacker windows machines developer style ("I wonder what happens if I delete that registry entry?"), I've never had Windows die on me.

Understood, James - I'm considering using Jungledisk and S3 in future for exactly that reason. But the drive itself seems fine; some software operation just mangled the master file table irreparably. My argument being that I could probably have repaired a mangled ext3 drive and got my files back ... and I've been threatening to go Linux for about two years now. It's provided the final push I needed to do it.

You could put your stuff "in the cloud" eg. Google Docs or Amazon S3 then you're not at the mercy of a harddrive, which can die equally well no matter which OS you're using.

Plus, to be pedantic, calling NTFS a legacy filesystem is somewhat misleading. The first release of NTFS was 1993, and the XP version of NTFS (5.1) was 2001. Meanwhile ext3 was released in 2001.

All which will, I'm sure, not help you feel better in the slightest.
