architectural collage

Talking with an architect friend earlier in the week, the topic of my (still pretty nascent) visual art practice came up. When I’d showed him some of my efforts, he asked me if I was familiar with the work of Danish architect Nils-Ole Lund.

I was not! I wish I had been.

Very Ballardian, this one. And look at the powerful effect achieved by using randomly torn pieces for the sky!

Super-delicate knife-work here, taking those road networks out of their original setting. I have some materials that might work well with this approach.

A lot of Lund’s pieces that I can find are quite explicitly critiquing postmodernism in its strictly architectural sense, but in a broader sense these images are entirely postmodern in their irony and use of juxtaposition, if rather unusual in terms of the delicacy and care taken to make things fit together. And again, the deployment of torn scraps within sharp, architectural lines produces a really engaging effect. Lots of great tricks to steal and play with.

(All of these images have been ganked from Socks, and are presented here for purposes of review and discussion, under what UK law would refer to as “fair dealing”.)
